The One Circle initiative has announced the launch of The One Circle ICT Reboot Ideathon, a competition aimed at engaging youth and innovators in proposing practical ideas that support circular economy practices within the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, with a primary focus on electronic waste recycling, device refurbishment, and reuse.
First, the competition comes as part of the One Circle project, launched in 2023. Moreover, One Circle is a national initiative supporting Egypt’s transition toward a circular economy in the ICT sector. In addition, the initiative operates within the electronics sector across Egypt.
Furthermore, the initiative is part of the global “Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains” project. Notably, the European Union and the Government of Finland co-fund this global project. Meanwhile, UNIDO leads the project in partnership with Orange, Nokia, and Cordon. At the local level, E-Tadweer and the Haya Karima Foundation provide support.
Through this global framework, the initiative builds strong local and international alliances. As a result, these alliances promote a more sustainable and responsible development model. Consequently, this model delivers long-term benefits for society and the environment.
Meanwhile, the ideathon engages Egyptian citizens and relevant stakeholders. Specifically, it supports developing practical solutions that enhance ICT sustainability. In parallel, it reduces the environmental impact of electronic waste. Additionally, it promotes responsible practices across the ICT sector. Finally, it extends the lifespan of electronic devices.
Importantly, participants develop and present innovative ideas only. Therefore, they do not need to build technical prototypes. Likewise, they do not deliver fully implemented programs.
The ideathon focuses on three main tracks. First, reuse and refurbishment of devices encourage repair and maintenance instead of disposal. Second, smart electronic waste management promotes collection and recycling through technological solutions. Third, sustainable technology design develops longer-lasting and repairable devices. Moreover, these devices use environmentally friendly materials.
The competition brings together university students and young professionals aged 18–25. Specifically, participants come from across Egypt. Additionally, they compete in teams of two members.
Interested teams apply through the official online application form. Subsequently, a jury reviews the submitted ideas online. Notably, partner representatives include Orange, Upgrade, and E-Tadweer. The jury evaluates ideas based on innovation, sustainability, impact, and gender balance.
The competition concludes with a closing ceremony and awards presentation. The event takes place on January 15, 2026, in Cairo. Top-performing teams receive one-month internship opportunities. These internships take place at One Circle partner organizations. As a result, participants gain hands-on experience in the green ICT sector.
Overall, the One Circle ICT Reboot Ideathon represents a new step toward youth empowerment. Moreover, it supports green innovation across Egypt. Ultimately, it contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive circular economy.
